Seasonal

Summer half & full days

This is a mountain crag, so we only run trips here in season (May–October). Roads and trails can close for snow, storms or fire, so we check the land manager's alerts before every trip.

About Horse Flats

Horse Flats sits at about 5,600 feet off the Angeles Crest Highway, where pines shade a scatter of granite boulders and small walls. It's best known for bouldering, but the Top Rope Wall and Top Rope Trail have a handy cluster of 5.5–5.8 lines that make for a great cool-weather alternative when the lowland crags are too hot.

The winding drive up the Crest is half the fun. We use Horse Flats from late spring through fall, when the campground road is open.

Highlights

  • Cool, pine-shaded climbing in summer
  • A tidy cluster of 5.5–5.8 top-ropes
  • Scenic Angeles Crest drive
  • Bouldering for breaks between climbs

Good for

  • Summer days
  • First-timers
  • Half days

Access and permits

Access
The campground and its road close in winter (about mid-November to April). Adventure Pass required (we provide it). Parts of Highway 2 farther east have been closed since the 2025 storms; Horse Flats is reached from the La Cañada side.
Permits
Commercial guiding on national forest land requires a Forest Service outfitter-guide special use permit.

We only guide where we're authorized. We follow the land manager's rules on group size, closures and fire weather. If weather, fire danger or a closure means we have to cancel, you get a full refund or a free reschedule (see our cancellation policy).

Access changes often, with fires, storms and closures all common. Check the land manager's alerts before you go.
